Abstract
This site consists of the outdoors of tourism facilities managed by Ilha a Pé under their private operation of the Santa Maria Trail huts.
As part of cooperation established with Desafio das Letras established under the project LIFE SNAILS, first restoration works have initially been deployed on site to control invasive flora and reinforce populations of endemic native species.
Despite priority given to intervene on the Malbusca site have undergone throughout the LIFE SNAILS project – as this site was outside from its intervention areas, both organizations are under the process of defining an intervention plan that allows analogous interventions to be conducted here by “voluntourists” that apply to and buy the related conservation programmes.
Species being protected from impacts of invasive flora in the site include Azorina vidalii - which despite protected by the Habitats Directive still occurs in Santa Maria and all the other Azorean islands in various other spots outside protected areas – and Pericallis malvifolia, another Azorean endemic, both of which with a high aesthetic value, which adds to the conservation one. This will allow Ilha a Pé to increase awareness among tourists on the relevance of these and other endemic species, as they will be observed along the Santa Maria Trail, while also allowing to leverage resources to their continued conservation.
